What it measures
The Swiss Consumer Price Index measures how the prices of a basket of goods and services bought by households change over time. The annual rate is the figure most often quoted.
The calendar shows the date and time of this release only; the figure itself is on the official page linked at the bottom.
Who publishes it and when
The Federal Statistical Office publishes it once a month at 08:30 Zurich time, usually in the first days of the month after the one it covers.
How it is put together
Prices are collected for a basket weighted by household spending, including rents, which have a large weight. Imported goods make up a sizeable part, so a strong franc tends to hold Swiss inflation down.
What traders watch
Traders compare the annual rate with the SNB's 0% to 2% range and with the SNB's own forecast, and watch core inflation and domestic versus imported prices.
How markets have usually reacted
A clear surprise has sometimes moved the franc, but moves are often modest. Readings close to zero have drawn more attention because they raise the question of negative rates or currency intervention.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting that the SNB's range is 0% to 2%, not a 2% point target.
- Ignoring the effect of the franc's own strength on imported prices.
How a higher or lower figure is usually read
There is no figure in the calendar for this event. Higher inflation is usually read as supportive for the Swiss franc, because it points to firmer SNB policy; lower inflation as negative. Not a signal.
