What it measures
The Tokyo CPI covers the 23 wards of central Tokyo. The calendar shows the annual rate of the preliminary figure.
Who publishes it and when
The Statistics Bureau publishes the preliminary Tokyo figure at 08:30 Tokyo time near the end of the month it describes, for example the January figure at the end of January.
How it is put together
It uses the same method as the national CPI but for a smaller area. Tokyo's basket differs from the national one, for example in rents, so the two do not always move together.
What traders watch
Traders use it as a preview of the national CPI and watch the core measures excluding fresh food and energy.
How markets have usually reacted
Because it is the first inflation reading of the month, a surprise has often moved the yen more than the national figure later does.
Common mistakes
Assuming the national figure will match it exactly.
How a higher or lower figure is usually read
Higher inflation is usually read as supportive for the yen; lower inflation as negative. Not a signal.
