What it measures
The unemployment rate is the number of unemployed people as a share of the labour force, seasonally adjusted. The calendar shows the date and time of this release only; the figure itself is on the official page linked at the bottom.
Who publishes it and when
The Statistics Bureau publishes it at 08:30 Tokyo time, near the end of the month after the one it covers.
How it is put together
It comes from the monthly Labour Force Survey of households. Changes are usually a tenth of a point or less.
What traders watch
Traders pay more attention to the jobs-to-applicants ratio published the same morning and to wage data released separately.
How markets have usually reacted
It rarely moves the yen much on its own.
Common mistakes
Expecting a large reaction from a low-impact release.
How a higher or lower figure is usually read
There is no figure in the calendar for this event. A higher unemployment rate is usually read as negative for the yen; a lower one as supportive. Moves are usually small. Not a signal.
