What it measures
Gross Domestic Product measures the value of the goods and services New Zealand produces. Stats NZ reports real growth quarter on quarter, not annualised. The calendar shows the date and time of this release only; the figure itself is on the official page linked at the bottom.
Who publishes it and when
Stats NZ publishes it at 10:45 Wellington time, a little under three months after the quarter ends.
How it is put together
It is built mainly from production data across industries. Because it is late, the Reserve Bank and markets often have a good idea of the result from earlier indicators.
What traders watch
Traders compare it with the Reserve Bank's latest forecast and look at growth per person and at revisions to earlier quarters.
How markets have usually reacted
Moves are usually moderate. A clear surprise has sometimes moved the New Zealand dollar in its direction.
Common mistakes
Treating old data as news about the economy today.
How a higher or lower figure is usually read
There is no figure in the calendar for this event. Faster growth than the previous reading is usually read as supportive for the New Zealand dollar; slower growth as negative. Not a signal.
