What it measures
The Consumer Price Index measures changes in the prices of a basket of goods and services bought by Canadian consumers, weighted by what households spend. The calendar shows the year-on-year rate.
Who publishes it and when
Statistics Canada publishes it in The Daily at 08:30 Toronto time, usually in the third week of the month after the one it covers.
How it is put together
Prices are collected across Canada for hundreds of items, and the basket weights are updated regularly from household spending data. The Bank of Canada also publishes its own preferred core measures, CPI-trim and CPI-median, from the same data on the same morning.
What traders watch
Traders watch the headline and the Bank of Canada's core measures, and the month-on-month change, which shows the latest pace before it shows up in the annual rate.
How markets have usually reacted
A higher than expected reading has often supported the Canadian dollar and Canadian yields; a lower one has often weighed on them. Oil prices, through petrol, can move the headline a lot.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring the core measures the Bank of Canada itself points to.
- Reading an energy-driven move in the headline as a change in underlying inflation.
How a higher or lower figure is usually read
Higher inflation than last month is usually read as supportive for the Canadian dollar; lower inflation as negative. Not a signal.
